The SSEAYP was launched as the joint program among Japan and ASEAN countries in January 1974. It is sponsored and carried out annually by the Government of Japan with the active participation of the Southeast Asian countries of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The country program in the Philippines is arranged and organized by the Philippine National Youth Commission (NYC).
This program seeks to promote friendship and mutual understanding among youths of Japan and Southeast Asian countries, to broaden their perspectives on the world, as well as to strengthen their motivations and abilities in international cooperation by participating in discussions, introductions of each country and various exchange activities both onboard the ship and in the countries which they visit.
