Movie enthusiasts or anybody interested in Japan should not miss the screening of the Japanese silent film masterpiece “ Oatsurae Jirokichi Koshi ” or “ Jirokichi the Rat” at the Shangri-La Malls Cinema on Friday, July 30, which will conclude this year's Philippines-Japan Friendship Month celebration.
Directed by one of the acclaimed directors from the early days of Japanese cinema, this film is set in 19 th Century Edo (Tokyo) period and centers on the story of a well-known character, a chivalrous burglar akin to a Japanese Robin Hood. Providing a live musical accompaniment to the silent film is a Philippine musical group “ Kalayo World Music Group ” (formerly known as Pinikpikan ). The movie will highlight the culturally-entertaining side of Japanese cinema.
Co-organized by the Embassy of Japan, the screening of the silent movie “ Jirokichi the Rat” is co-presented by the Japan Foundation Manila (JFM) and Shangri-La Plaza Mall.
For the whole month of July, the Embassy of Japan and the JFM co-presented a series of well-received events that catered to a whole array of interest, from cinema and contemporary arts to music –classical and pop – and anime, to celebrate the Friendship Month and to foster closer ties between Japanese and Filipinos.
The movie, while concluding this year's Philippines-Japan Friendship Month celebration, is also an inaugurating event of the 3 rd International Silent Film Festival. The Embassies of France and Italy, Goethe Institut and Instituto Cervantes will also be bringing silent film masterpieces from their respective countries to the Silent Film Festival.
