Letter of Sympathy from Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada
and Emergency Relief on the Damages Caused by the
Typhoon in the Republic of the Philippines
1. On September 28 (Mon), Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada sent a letter to Philippine Foreign Secretary Alberto G. Romulo, expressing heartfelt sympathy to the losses of many lives and serious damage in Metro Manila and other regions caused by Typhoon Ondoy which hit the Philippines.
Mr. Okada noted in the letter his best wishes for the speedy alleviation of the suffering of the affected people as well as for the full restoration in the areas damaged by this calamity.
Mr. Okada also mentioned in the letter that Japan will spare no effort in providing necessary assistance and cooperation for rehabilitation of affected people and areas.
2. The Government of Japan, in response to the request from the Government of the Republic of the Philippines, has decided to provide emergency relief goods equivalent to approximately 20 million yen (approximately US$220,000) to the Government of the Republic of the Philippines.
