The Japanese Government announced today its decision to extend food assistance to the victims of tropical storm Ondoy through the United Nations World Food Program (WFP).
The emergency assistance, amounting to 4.5 million US dollars (approximately 210 million pesos), will provide food supplies which are the most urgent need of the people affected by the calamity. Cost of logistical support, namely use of h elicopters and other land transportation vehicles, is also included in order to effectively delivery relief goods to evacuation centers and other areas isolated by the flood. The assistance is made in a response to the UN flash appeal issued on October 3rd, requesting donors' support for Ondoy victims.
This food assistance once comes in addition to the emergency assistance extended by the Japanese Government, namely: a) the 20 million yen (approximately 10 million pesos or 220 thousand US dollars) emergency relief goods delivered through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on September 30th; and b) contribution to relief and medical missions' assistance through Japanese NGOs.
