Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura participated in the 65th Anniversary of Leyte Gulf Landings on October 20, 2009. The Ceremony was held at the Mac Arthur Landing Memorial National Park in Palo, Leyte , organized by Governor Carlos Jericho L. Petilla. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Secretary of National Defense, Gilbert C. Teodoro Jr. and representatives from the Embassies of Australia, Canada and the United States and many veterans also attended the ceremony. In his speech, Ambassador Katsura expressed his heartfelt apologies and deep sense of remorse over the damages caused by the Japanese military in the Philippines during World War II and reaffirmed that Japan will continue helping in nation-building efforts of the Philippines, as a true friend and a close neighbor.
