The Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) of the Embassy of Japan in cooperation with the Philippine Association of Japanese Government Scholars (PHILAJAMES) conducted a pre-departure orientation on September 11 at the JICC Hall for twenty-nine Filipino recipients of the Japanese Government Scholarship. Also present were thirty-five PHILAJAMES members.

The scholars who are bound for Japan this September or October are under the Research category and Teacher Training category. The scholars under the Research category will pursue further studies, masters or doctorate degrees in their chosen fields for one and a half to five years while those under the Teacher Training category will learn advanced teaching techniques and methods for one and a half years.

The pre-departure orientation was held to prepare the scholars for their life and study in Japan . It also served as a venue for scholars to meet and obtain valuable tips and insights on living and studying in Japan from Embassy officers and former Japanese Government scholars who are members of the PHILAJAMES.

Ambassador Makoto Katsura briefed on the Philippines-Japan relations and stressed the important role of education and exchange programs in bilateral relations. It was a lively session with Ambassador responding to various queries and questions addressed by the scholars. “I am excited to start my research in Japan . I expect to learn a lot from this experience” says one scholar who intends to take up his doctorate degree in Japan after his research in public governance. Dr. Enriquez, president of PHILAJAMES expressed her hope for the scholars to become future leaders and contribute to the socio-economic development of the Philippines . JICC Director Tomoko Dodo closed the orientation expressing her expectations for the scholars to learn the Japanese language and culture and to interact with the Japanese people during their stay in Japan.
