On Monday, December 19, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance amounting to 25 million Japanese yen (approximately 14 million pesos) for the victims of Tropical Storm “Sendong”. Aimed at alleviating the difficulties of the victims, the assistance comes in the form of relief goods such as water tanks, generators, and other relief items.
Tropical Storm Sendong cut across vast areas of Mindanao last December 16 to 17, triggering a series of flash floods and landslides resulting in massive damage, hundreds of casualties, and thousands of displaced residents, particularly in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City.
Last Sunday, December 18, Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba sent a message to Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario expressing his condolences and sympathy for the loss of many lives and for the people affected by the disaster as well as stating that Japan will spare no efforts in providing necessary assistance and cooperation for rehabilitation of affected people and areas. The Government of Japan reiterates its commitment in assisting the Philippine Government's disaster management efforts.
