A foreigner who has departed from Japan with a re-entry permit and is unable to return to Japan before the end of the re-entry permit's period of validity for an unavoidable reason, such as illness, travel interruption, or continuation of studies, can apply for an extension of the re-entry permit's period of validity by submitting documents detailing the reason. |

Application should be filed through accredited agencies. (Please see our website for the list of Agents or get one from FAX service by Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo , or get one from visa gate of the Embassy.) |

○ The re-entry permit's which the period of validity expired can not be extended in principle.
○ In case that the passport bearing the re-entry permit is lost, the applicant has to request from his/her relative, etc. in Japan for the Foreign Registration Certificate issued by City Hall and get the re-entry permit stamp at the back page at Immigration office in Japan .
In case that there is no relative in Japan , the applicant has to arrange with the City hall for the Foreign Registration Certificate
○ Even for bearers of multiple re-entry permit, once an extension of re-entry permit is granted, after entering Japan, that re-entry permit cannot be used anymore. There is a need to obtain a re-entry permit if there is a desire to re-enter Japan anew.
