The Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) of the Embassy of Japan, in cooperation with the Philippine Association of Japanese Government Scholars (PHILAJAMES, Inc.) held a pre-departure orientation for the 2012 Japanese Government Scholars on March 2, 2012 (Friday) at the JICC Multi-Purpose Hall of the Embassy of Japan. The students are scheduled to leave this April to pursue further studies in various Japanese universities.

Minister Motohiko Kato of the Embassy of Japan graced the pre-departure orientation to warmly congratulate the 29 students joining the roster of the Japanese Government Scholars. JICC Director Kiyoshi Takeuchi was also present to welcome both scholars and PHILAJAMES alumni alike. PHILAJAMES president, Dr. Amelia C. Fajardo, gave an introduction and background of the PHILAJAMES, and the roles it will play in the scholars' lives after graduation in their respective Japanese universities. PHILAJAMES members Ms. Lyle Fernandez and Dr. Greg Pawilen shared their own experiences as former students in Japan. The pre-departure orientation ended with an open forum to better prepare the new scholars their upcoming studies in Japan.

Since 1954, the Japanese Government Scholarship has been supporting foreign nationals to study in Japan for advancement of education and the promotion of mutual understanding. Since its implementation more than 50 years ago, there have been about 3,000 Filipino recipients of this scholarship. This April, the Embassy of Japan will once again open the application for the Undergraduate, Special Training, College of Technology, and Research categories. All Japanese Government Scholarship Programs are offered yearly.
