Last October 5, 2012, 37 Japanese students studying in different universities in the country gathered at the annual “Orientation / Get – Together for Japanese Students” , co-organized by the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) of the Embassy of Japan and the Association of Philippine Private Alumni of Japanese Universities (APPAJU) , at the JICC Multi-Purpose Hall of the Embassy of Japan.

Japanese students from Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, University of the Philippines, and World City Colleges were welcomed by JICC Director Kiyoshi Takeuchi as he delivered the opening remarks for the program. APPAJU Adviser Ms. Cecil Tolentino greeted the guests with a short introduction of APPAJU and its activities.

The orientation consisted of several discussions helpful to the Japanese students to continue their education in the country. Vice Consul Tsubasa Okamoto of the Consular Section of the Embassy of Japan provided safety tips and reminders for the students to make their stay in the Philippines enjoyable and easy. First Secretary Kei Fukunaga of the Political Section of the Embassy of Japan offered valuable guidance in helping the students in determining possible career opportunities available to them. Student representatives from local university organizations, namely the Asian Studies Society of the University of Santo Tomas, the Toujin of the Ateneo de Manila University, and the UP Tomo Kai of the University of the Philippines also joined the event to introduce their respective associations to the Japanese students. Lastly, Atty. Reyna Faith Depasucat of the APPAJU closed the program with some word of advice to both the Japanese and Filipino students present.

The annual “Orientation / Get – Together for Japanese Students” serves as an occasion for both the Japanese students studying in the Philippines and the Filipino students interested in Japan and its culture to establish new relations outside their respective organizations and schools. It is also expected that through this event, Filipino students will be informed of the opportunities of having a Japanese education through their communication with Filipino alumni and the Japanese students.
