October 20, 2012, Minister Ohmori participated in the 68 th Anniversary of the Leyte Gulf Landings. The Ceremony was held at the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park in Palo, Leyte, organized by Governor Carlos Jericho L. Petilla. Former Senator Ramon B. Magsaysay, Jr., and representatives from the Embassies of Australia, United Kingdom and the United States and many veterans also attended the ceremony. Minister Ohmori expressed his heartfelt apologies with a deep sense of remorse for the tragedy in the Philippines during those fateful years. He emphasized that Japan has learned the lessons of history and has become a peace-loving nation since the end of the last war, and expressed gratitude for the friendship and close cooperation that have since blossomed between Japan and its former adversaries. He ended his speech by expressing confidence that continued close cooperation among nations would eventually bring about peace and prosperity in the world.
