1. On October 9, in a meeting with President Benigno Aquino in Brunei, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced that the Government of Japan would extend Emergency Grant Aid of two million US dollars (approximately 164 million Japanese yen) through International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and World Food Programme (WFP) to support relief operations in the sectors of food, water and sanitation, etc., for the displaced people from the fighting in the island of Mindanao, Philippines.
2. The fighting erupted between a faction of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Zamboanga City situated in the western part of Mindanao on September 9. Although the Philippine government declared the end of the military operations on September 27, the number of displaced people still amounts to approximately 120,000 according to the announcement of the Philippine government on October 3.
3. In response to the request from the Philippine government and UN's call for support, and taking into consideration the bilateral friendship and cooperation based on the Japan-Philippines strategic partnership, the Government of Japan will extend the emergency grant aid.
