69th Anniversary of the Leyte Gulf Landings

Minister Amano participated in the 69th Anniversary of the Leyte Gulf Landings on October 20, 2013. The Ceremony was held at the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park in Palo, Leyte, organized by Governor Leopoldo Dominico L. Petilla. Department of National Defense Undersecretary Eduardo G. Batac , Ambassador Bill Tweddell of Australia, Ambassador Reuben Levermore of New zealand and a representative from the United States as well as many veterans also attended the ceremony. Minister Amano expressed his heartfelt apologies with a deep sense of remorse for the tragedy in the Philippines during those fateful years. He emphasized that Japan has learned the lessons of history and has become a peace-loving nation since the end of the last war, and expressed gratitude for the friendship and close cooperation that have since blossomed between Japan and its former adversaries. He ended his speech by expressing confidence that continued close cooperation among nations would eventually bring about peace and prosperity in the world.
