KIZUNA Dispatching Program to the Philippines 2013

Japanese University Students Recounts own Experiences

of the Great East Japan Earthquake

15 Japanese students from Tohoku Gakuin University , Tohoku Fukushi University , and Tohoku University , will spend 9 days in the Philippines as the latest batch under the KIZUNA Project. Working within the goals of the Kizuna Project, this time the program brings Japanese students who are survivors of the Great East Japan Earthquake last March 11, 2011 to the Philippines in order to share to the Filipino community their own experiences and lessons learned from the disaster. All activities and related programs will be implemented by Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE).

The Japanese delegation will be paying a courtesy call to the Embassy of Japan on March 20, 2013. During this meeting, the students will learn of the outline of the bilateral relation between the Philippines and Japan, and the assistance extended by Filipino people upon the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Among the other sites included in their itinerary are the Ayala Museum, Quezon Memorial Park, Rizal Park and Intramuros, to learn the history of the Philippines and the life and great work of Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero. They will also visit the Philippine Red Cross to learn its efforts for disaster management and social activities. The Japanese students will also pay a visit to the people of the Payatas dump site, accompanied by Intercommunication Center for Asia and Nippon (I-Can) to learn about I-Can's social activities in the area.

Promotion of mutual understanding is also a significant aspect of the “KIZUNA Dispatching Program to the Philippines”. The Japanese students will have an exchange program with 15 Filipino students from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, for a collaborative project on disaster prevention ideas and activities. This joined assignment between the Japanese and Filipino students will be presented to a participating barangay in Marikina City.

The Kizuna Program aims to encourage participants to communicate to other countries that Japan is on its way to recovery. Through their experiences, the participants will be able to provide accurate and first-hand information to the global community not only about the recovery of Japan, but also of the many attractions in various parts of Japan.

The Kizuna Project, the word kizuna meaning “bonds”, will invite more than 10,000 youths from the Asian/Oceanian regions, including 285 Filipinos, to have an opportunity to participate in specially designed programs. The project was approved by the Japanese Diet as a part of the third supplementary budget in November 2011, and will be implemented by the end of March 2013.
