Japan constructs Primary Hospital

in Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur

Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe congratulates Mayor Nacianceno M. Pacalioga Jr. of the Municipality of Dumingag, after signing the grant contract for “The Project for the Construction of Primary Hospital in Dumingag, Zamboanaga del Sur” on March 19, 2013.

Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Mayor Nacianceno M. Pacalioga Jr. of the Municipality of Dumingag signed the grant contract for “The Project for Construction of Primary Hospital in Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur” on 19 March 2013 . The p roject, amounting to US$ 123,453 (approximately 4.8 million pesos) , is funded through the scheme of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The Municipality of Dumingag has no existing hospital to provide the necessary medical needs of its residents. For serious cases, residents seek treatment in private hospitals located in municipalities several kilometers away, which often charge at a higher rate for their services. Due to this problem and the prevalence of poverty in the area, residents remain untreated or turn to alternative medicine and health care.

Through the GGP, the funding for the construction of a primary hospital shall be provided to benefit more than 50,000 residents of Dumingag and nearby communities. The hospital will be operated and managed by the Municipality through its Rural Health Unit.

The project is part of the Japan-Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstruction and Development (J-BIRD), the Japanese government's package of assistance in support of peace and development in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao.
