The Government of Japan continues its goals of raising awareness and solidarity among the people of the ASEAN member countries through the restart of its highly evaluated JENESYS Program. Called the JENESYS 2.0, this new and improved version of the JENESYS program maintains its vision of bringing to Japan many young people from Asia to promote exchanges with the Japanese youths. It will add another 30,000 youths to the 30,000 young people who previously travelled to Japan under the previous program.

The JENESYS 2.0 was relaunched by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who launched the first JENESYS Program six years ago. One of the themes of the JENESYS 2.0 is promoting consciousness toward ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) among the young generation within the Southeast Asian regions to result in the making of the AEC Youth Network. The JENESYS 2.0 aims to forge a stronger relationship between the ASEAN member countries and Japan, and to let the young generation of Japan have a deeper understanding of ASEAN countries and AEC.

The first batch of delegates leaving for the program, composed of 90 university students from the 10 ASEAN Member States (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam), have left last March 30, 2013 and are expected to stay in Japan until April 7, 2013. There will be a total of three batches for the JENESYS 2.0. Each participating country has 9 student representatives with backgrounds in Economic & Social Sciences, Science & Technology, and Arts, Creative Works & Culture.

The JENESYS 2.0 is designed to create fellowship among the students and their Southeast Asian peers and Japanese counterparts through intensive interaction and structured exchanges of view. Through the various activities specially prepared for this program, participants are expected to have a holistic understanding of Japan and its people; to have the practical knowledge on Japan’s experiences for promoting local regions to address development gaps and attain global excellence; and to learn about the potential of the Japanese economy.

Participants will be encouraged to take a trip around Tokyo to experience the actual condition of the capital of Japan, and to experience the advanced and safe technology through the Shinkansen. They are scheduled to pay courtesy calls to the local governmental offices to learn about the Japanese governing system. The participants are expected to prepare the establishment of the AEC Youth Network by interaction with the Japanese university students through school visits and dialogues. They will also experience a homestay with local families.

The next two batches are scheduled to leave in May and June 2013, with 36 Filipinos in each batch representing the Philippines. Supported by the Government of Japan, the JENESYS 2.0 ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Youth Network is organized by the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE), in close cooperation with the National Youth Commission (NYC) of the Republic of the Philippines. All expenses incurred during the program will be borne by the Government of Japan.
