Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe congratulates Mayor Salik P. Mamasabulod of the Municipal Government of Pagalungan after signing the grant contract for "The Project for the Construction of Classrooms for Sapakan Elementary School in Pagalungan, Maguindanao" on March 20, 2014.

Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Mayor Salik P. Mamasabulod of the Municipal Government of Pagalungan signed the grant contract for The Project for Construction of Classrooms for Sapakan Elementary School”on 20 March 2014. The project, amounting to US$ 121,905 (approximately 5.4 million pesos), is funded under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The 272 pupils of the school are currently using six (6) old classrooms, which are dilapidated due to regular flooding. It is urgent to provide the school with new and safer classrooms.

Through the GGP, Sapakan Elementary School will be funded for construction of six (6) new classrooms equipped with armchairs, blackboards, sets of tables, chairs for teachers and toilets. The new classrooms will provide a better learning environment for 272 pupils in the community.

The project is part of the Japan-Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstruction and Development (J-BIRD), the Japanese government's package of assistance in support of peace and development in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao. Since the launch of J-BIRD in 2006, Japan has supported 75 GGP projects in the total amount of 6.8 million US dollars (approximately 300 million pesos) through J-BIRD.
