Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe joined the commemoration of the ARAW NG KAGITINGAN on Tuesday, 9 April 2014. Held at Mt. Samat in Pilar, Bataan, the Ceremony was graced by President Benigno S. Aquino III as the Guest of Honor.
In his speech, Ambassador Urabe expressed his heartfelt apologies and deep sense of remorse for such inexplicable suffering during World War II. He pointed out that Japan has learned valuable lessons from history, that the use of force does not give ultimate solutions but problems and that they vowed never to wage war again. Japan continues to promote peace, stability and prosperity by building strategic partnerships with the Philippines and other nations. Their most recent participation includes disaster relief in Leyte, peace building in Mindanao, and search for the missing Malaysian Airlines aircraft.
Since 1954, the Japanese Government Scholarship has sponsored the education of more than 3,000 Filipino students, continuing a legacy of cooperation and mutual understanding for over 50 years.
