On Friday, May 16, 2014, the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) in cooperation with the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) of the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines and the National Youth Commission (NYC) organized a pre-departure orientation at the DOST-WGP Conference Room for the 11th Batch of JENESYS 2.0 (Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths 2.0) Filipino delegates.
JICC Director Tatsuo Kitagawa opened the orientation with a congratulatory message for the participants while JICC Researcher/Adviser Mr. Shinichiro Kato discussed the background and objectives of the JENESYS 2.0 Programme. The students were also briefed on their role as "Ambassadors of Goodwill" and were given a short lecture on Japanese culture, customs, and etiquette to help make their stay in Japan more enjoyable and comfortable. Also present was DOST Supervising Undersecretary and Officer-in-Charge Prof. Fortunato T. De La Peña, who gave the participants a short message of encouragement, recollecting his previous experience and lessons he learned as a former international student himself.
This batch, composed of 78 university students in scientific fields and three supervisors, is embarking on a nine-day science-and-technology-themed tour of Japan that commenced on Monday, May 19. Apart from industrial company visits and prefectural excursions, students will also be taking part in cultural immersions and homestays as part of the programme.
The JENESYS 2.0 Programme stemmed from the JENESYS Programme initiated in 2007 by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in order to provide an avenue of friendship and intellectual exchange among Asian youths as well as to introduce and promote Japanese culture on today's young generation by inviting them on short-term visits to Japan.
