Pre-Departure Orientation Held for New Batch of
Japanese Government Scholars

Ready to go and ready to learn. The 2016 Batch of MEXT Scholars pose for a photo after the pre-departure orientation held last March 12, 2016. They are joined by JICC Director Mr. Tatsuo Kitagawa, JICC Researcher/Adviser Mr. Simon Kubota, and PHILAJAMES members and officers led by President Gilda Lasat-Uy.

The Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) of the Embassy of Japan, in cooperation with the Philippine Association of Japanese Government Scholars (PHILAJAMES) hosted a Pre-departure Orientation for a new batch of students under the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MONBUKAGAKUSHO:MEXT) Scholarship Program.

The group is set to depart on April and is composed of twenty-two Research Category students (two year graduate courses) and one Specialized Training student (three year program at a specialized training college).

PHILAJAMES Vice President for External Affairs Lavi Penaverde opened the event, followed by welcome remarks and introduction to PHILAJAMES by President Gilda Lasat-Uy. Former MEXT scholar Prof. Eric Tingatinga gave an in-depth look at student-life in Japan and opened the floor for questions from the new scholars. The orientation was capped off by an inspirational message from JICC Director Tatsuo Kitagawa, who emphasized the importance of contributing to the development of one’s country and being a catalyst for change.

Since its founding in the year 1954, the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program has given students from all over the world the opportunity to study in Japan’s top universities. To date, over 3,500 Filipino students have been granted scholarships in one of the following categories: Japanese Studies, Research, Teacher Training, College of Technology, Undergraduate, and Specialized Training.
