Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe congratulates Ms. Lily Racca Estoya, Mayor of Calintaan
after signing the grant contract on October 9, 2013 at the Embassy of Japan,
witnessed by representatives from the Municipality of Calintaan and Embassy officials.
Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Ms. Lily Racca Estoya, Mayor of Calintaan, signed the grant contract for "The Project for Reconstruction of Classrooms for Calintaan Central Elementary School in Calintaan, Occidental Mindoro" on October 9, 2013 at the Embassy of Japan. The project, amounting to US$ 107,500 (approximately 4.3 million pesos), is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
Pupils of Calintaan Central Elementary School have been studying in makeshift classrooms since Typhoon Ondoy destroyed six (6) of their academic classrooms. These pupils have to attend classes in dilapidated rooms that are not conducive to learning especially during the rainy season. The current situation is an urgent issue that needs to be addressed by providing the 240 pupils of the school a safer learning environment.
Through the GGP, the LGU of Calintaan will build six (6) classrooms equipped with armchairs, blackboards and sets of tables and chairs for the teachers.
The Government of Japan, as the top ODA donor for the Philippines, launched the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects in the Philippines in 1989 for the purpose of reducing poverty and helping various communities engaged in grassroots activities. As of present, 486 grassroots projects have been funded by GGP. Japan believes that this project will not only strengthen the friendship between the peoples of Japan and the Philippines but also contribute to further fostering a strategic partnership between Japan and the Philippines toward the future.
