Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Toshinao Urabe and Municipal Mayor of Madrid Mr. Jose A. Apilleda signed the grant contract for "The Project for Procurement of Custom Plowing Equipment in Madrid, Surigao del Sur" on November 7, 2013 at the Embassy of Japan. The total amount is US$ 62,500 (approximately 2.5 million pesos) and is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
More than 30% of the total population in Madrid, Surigao Del Sur is living below poverty line. The residents are mostly farmers who have suffered from low income due to low productivity. Nearly 60% of the municipality is forest and the soil is so hard that it requires much labor to cultivate.
Through the GGP, the LGU of Madrid will procure a Tractor for more efficiency and to gain productivity that will eventually increase the income of farmers. Approximately 2,000 farmers in the area will benefit from this project.
The Government of Japan, as the top ODA donor for the Philippines, launched the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects in the Philippines in 1989 for the purpose of reducing poverty and helping various communities engaged in grassroots activities. As of present, 487 grassroots projects have been funded by GGP. Japan believes that this project will not only strengthen the friendship between the peoples of Japan and the Philippines but also contribute to further fostering a strategic partnership between Japan and the Philippines toward the future.
