Japan Provides Equipment for Coconut Farmers in San Jose, Northern Samar

on November 7, 2013 at the Embassy of Japan. The ceremony was witnessed by the representative of AKMA and the Embassy.

 

Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Mr. Ferdinand T. Luzon, President of Aksyon Kalinga Para Sa Masa (AKMA) signed the grant contract for "The Project for Procurement of Equipment for Coco Coir Production and Processing in San Jose, Northern Samar" on November 7, 2013 at the Embassy of Japan. The total amount is US$ 81,506 (approximately 3.4 million pesos), and is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

 

Coconut farmers in San Jose, Northern Samar have suffered from poverty. It is because they do not have other source of income than selling coco flesh. In order to alleviate poverty of the farmers, facilities that serve for an alternative livelihood for the coconut farmers is deemed necessary.

 

Through the GGP project, AKMA will procure the necessary machineries and equipment for the establishment of village level coco coir processing facility. The facility will produce coco fibers that will be distributed to the coconut farmers in San Jose, Northern Samar for the production of rope and other coco-geotextile products. Through the project, an alternative source of income will be given to approximately 1,600 farmers in the said municipality.

 

The Government of Japan, as the top ODA donor for the Philippines, launched the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects in the Philippines in 1989 for the purpose of reducing poverty and helping various communities engaged in grassroots activities. As of present, 487 grassroots projects have been funded by GGP. Japan believes that this project will not only strengthen the friendship between the peoples of Japan and the Philippines but also contribute to further fostering a strategic partnership between Japan and the Philippines toward the future.
