Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Mr. Auke Y. Idzenga, Chairman, Management Committee of Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc. (AIDFI) signed the grant contract for “ The Project for Construction of Plant for Lemongrass Oil Distillation in Negros Occidental ” on 5 March 2013 at the Embassy of Japan. The p roject, amounting to US$ 76,722 (approximately 3.0 million pesos) , is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
Local farmers in Mambugsay, Cauayan, Negros Occidental, have been facing extreme poverty because the farmland of Mambugsay is not suitable for growing sugarcane, unlike the other part of the Province. The problem has hampered economic growth in the area.
In order to tackle the problem, AIDFI focuses on lemongrass as an alternative crop, which is more suitable for the area. With the fund of the GGP, AIDFI is going to: a) construct a plant for distillation of lemongrass oil ; b) p rocur e oil distillation apparatus ; and c) procure a vehicle to transport lemongrass. Through the project, approximately 25 households of farmers will be benefited as production of lemongrass oil will lead them to more stable income. The expected increase of their income will facilitate the farmers to pay for their family's education and health care.
