Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Mr. Roland F. Carpio, Jr., Municipal Mayor of Catarman , signed the grant contract for “ The Project for Construction of Schistosomiasis Control Center and Procurement of Medical Equipment in Catarman, Northern Samar ” on 5 March 2013 at the Embassy of Japan. The p roject, amounting to US$ 69,011 (approximately 2.7 million pesos), is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
Municip ality of Catarman has been facing a local parasitic disease called schistosomiasis. The prevalence of the disease has caused health problems and obstruction of economic growth in the area. In addition, the Municipality has limited resources to control the spread of the disease.
The project will fund a) construction of s chistosomiasis Control Center; b) procurement of medical equipments; and c) installation of an automatic detector of schistosomiasis. The project will enable more accurate and efficient detection, treatment and prevention of the disease, benefitting approximately 10,000 residents in the Municipality.
