Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Mr. Abdulkadir Abubakar, Executive Director of Bangasaro Development and Resource Center, Inc . signed the grant contract for “ The Project for Construction of Classrooms for Upper Bagoinged Elementary School ” on 19 March 2013 . The p roject, amounting to US$ 116,396.00 (approximately 4.5 million pesos) , is funded through the scheme of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
During the armed conflict in 2008, families in Pagalungan were displaced, forcing Upper Bagoinged Elementary School to close operations. When the conflict ceased in 2009, residents gradually returned, which resulted to the re-opening of the school. Since then, the school's campus had three makeshift classrooms made of light materials with limited number of armchairs. The school had to implement multi-grade classes to accommodate the increasing number of enrollees.
Through the GGP, Upper Bagoinged Elementary School will be funded for the construction of six (6) new classrooms equipped with armchairs, blackboards and sets of tables and chairs for teachers. The new classrooms shall provide a better learning environment for 300 pupils from Barangay Bagoinged and nearby communities.
The project is part of the Japan-Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstruction and Development (J-BIRD), the Japanese government's package of assistance in support of peace and development in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao.
