Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Mr. Bashir Husain, President of Sharif Awliya Academy, signed the grant contract for “ The Project for Construction of a School Building for Sharif Awliya ” on 19 March 2013. The p roject, amounting to US$ 111,207 (approximately 4 .3 million pesos) , is funded through the scheme of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

Since its establishment in 1996, Sharif Awliya Academy, a private institution, has been considered the “School for the Poor.” It also caters to students coming from indigent families. Located in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao, the School was utilized as an evacuation center during the armed conflict in the area, resulting to disruption of classes.

Although the peace and order situation has resumed, refugees or Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) opted to stay and live in the Municipality, causing an increase in the School's enrollees, posing classroom shortage.

Through the GGP, Sharif Awliya Academy will be given funding for the construction of five (5) new classrooms equipped with armchairs, chalkboards and sets of teachers' tables and chairs. The project will provide a better learning environment for 747 students of the School.

The project is part of the Japan-Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstruction and Development (J-BIRD), the Japanese government's package of assistance in support of peace and development in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao.
