Japanese NGO and GOJ Continue Support for Organic Farming in Nueva Vizcaya

Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Toshinao Urabe and Mr. Shinichiro Tsuji , Director of GLM Institute (GLMi), a Japanese NGO based in Nueva Vizcaya , signed the grant contract for the third year of the project " Support to Improve Livelihood of Poor Farmers through Production of Organic and Reduced-chemical Produce in Nueva Vizcaya" at the Embassy of Japan on February 7, 2014. The project, amounting to US$ 265,234 (approximately 12 million pesos), is funded by the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects, a grant funding program of Japan's Official Development Assistance (ODA).

The implementation of the first and second phase of the project has been successful in promoting sustainable farming in Nueva Vizcaya. In order to consolidate the process of overcoming poverty through farming with organic and reduced chemical produce, GLMi is going to implement the third phase of the project, which includes organization of farmers associations, capacity building for better production, promotion of certification system of organic products, and extension of the market.

GLMi has been active in forest preservation in the province since 2002. It implemented the preceding project "Promotion of Participatory Forest Management in the Critical Watershed of Nueva Vizcaya Province" from 2008 to 2011.

The Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects started in the Philippines in 2002. Since then, the Japanese Government has made contracts for 35 projects in the Philippines under the scheme, amounting to approximately 580 million yen (approximately 270 million pesos) in total. Japan believes that this project will strengthen not only friendship between the peoples of Japan and the Philippines but also the existing strategic partnership between Japan and the Philippines.
