Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Ms. Jobayra P. Tandalong, Chairman and Executive Director of Bangsamoro Women Organization of Davao Oriental (BAWARDO) signed the grant contract for “The Project for the Construction of Women Training Center in Lupon, Davao Oriental” on 20 March 2014. The project, amounting to US$ 108,932 (approximately 4.8 million pesos), is funded under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
Most of Bangsamoro people in Lupon have been suffering from poverty due to social preception that would make women’s social participation difficult.
Through GGP, BAWARDO will be funded for construction of a training center equipped with various training equipment. This facility will provide around 2,000 women with vocational trainings aimed at enhancing their knowledge and skills in order to enhance women’s participation in society and economy.
The project is part of the Japan-Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstruction and Development (J-BIRD), the Japanese government's package of assistance in support of peace and development in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao. Since the launch of J-BIRD in 2006, Japan has supported 75 GGP projects in the total amount of 6.8 million US dollars (approximately 300 million pesos) through J-BIRD.
