First Secretary and Labour Attaché Hiroyuki Enoki attended the turnover ceremony last July 27, 2015 for "The Project for the Reconstruction of Six Classroom Building for Calintaan Central Elementary School" in Municipality of Calintaan, Occidental Mindoro. This is part of the Japan Official Development Assistance (ODA) under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
The ceremony was attended by Ms. Lily Estoya, Municipal Mayor of Calintaan, Mr. Ferdinand J. Gotoy, District Supervisor of the Department of Education, Mr. Domingo Llavan, Principal of Calintaan Central Elementary School and other officials from the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Calintaan including students and parents of the said school.
The aftermath of Typhoon Ondoy caused destruction of 6 classrooms in Calintaan Central Elementary School. As a means to recover, the school initially constructed makeshift classrooms to compensate its needs, but after three (3) years it became dilapidated and not safe for the use of the students.
In FY 2013, the EOJ provided assistance to the LGU of Calintaan amounting to Ninety Five Thousand Four Hundred Fourteen US Dollars and 91/100 (USD 95,414.91) or approximately Php 5.17 million pesos. The grant was used for the replacement of six (6) classrooms which were destroyed by Typhoon Ondoy in FY 2009. Part of the assistance provided is the construction of toilet for each classroom and procurement of 18 blackboards, 6 sets of tables and chairs for teachers and 300 units of armchairs for students. Through this project, the EOJ hopes to provide conducive and safe learning environment to around 600 students of Calintaan Central Elementary School.
The Government of Japan, as the top ODA donor for the Philippines, launched the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects in the Philippines in 1989 for the purpose of reducing poverty and helping various communities engaged in grassroots activities. At present, 512 grassroots projects have been implemented by GGP. Japan believes that this project will not only strengthen the friendship between the peoples of Japan and the Philippines but also contribute to further fostering a strategic partnership between Japan and the Philippines toward the future.
