A groundbreaking ceremony for the National Irrigation Sector Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (NISRIP) was held on December 3, 2015 in Lucena City, Quezon Province. Mr. Kenji Terada, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, and Mr. Yoshiyuki Ueno, Sectional Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), attended the ceremony. Joining them were around 100 representatives of the National Irrigation Agency. NISRIP is funded through the Japan Official Development Assistance program. The total loan support for this project amounts to Six Billion One Hundred Eighty Seven Million yen (¥6,187,000,000), equivalent to the Two Billion Three Hundred Eighty Million peso (PHP2,380,000,000)※.
NISRIP aims to improve farm efficiency, increase farm yield, and enhance the quality of rice produced in the country through the rehabilitation of 11 existing national irrigation sites, which cover 35,670 hectares of farmlands, and capacity building of 154 irrigator associations on the matters of irrigation system maintenance and association management. A total of 22,563 farmers are expected to benefit from the project.
