Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Kazuhide Ishikawa and the Provincial Governor of South Cotabato, Ms. Daisy P. Avance-Fuentes signed the grant contract for "The Project for the Construction of Classrooms for Dumadalig Integrated School in Tantangan, South Cotabato" on March 24, 2015 at the Astoria Plaza, Pasig City, Metro Manila. The total amount is US$ 97,334 (approximately 3.97 million pesos) and is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
(Project Summary)
Through GGP, the Embassy of Japan (EOJ) will provide financial assistance for the construction of three (3) units two (2) classroom building with attached toilets to benefit a total of 716 students of the above-mentioned school.
Dumadalig Integrated School is among the public education school in the province of South Cotabato. It is situated in Brgy. Dumadalig in the Municipality of Tantangan. For SY 2013-2014, the school recorded a total of 716 students with classroom to pupil's ratio of 1:57 which is far beyond the Department of Education's standard rate of 1:45. To accommodate all the students, the school is conducting 2 classes in a single room while others are occupying four (4) makeshift and dilapidated classrooms.

The Province of South Cotabato is situated in the southern part of the island of Mindanao. It is known for its T'nalak weaving which is a traditional masterpiece celebrated as the ultimate cultural emblem of the province (Province of South Cotabato Website). The province has a total land area of 3,706 square kilometers with a total population of 827,200 (NSO Website). It is composed of 11 municipalities being governed by the City Government of South Cotabato.
For the education sector, the province recorded a total of 57 public elementary schools and 87 public high schools (DepEd Region XII website). Based on SY 2013-2014, total enrollment is 11,072 students for public elementary school and 49,428 students for public high schools.
(About the GGP)
The Government of Japan, as the top ODA donor for the Philippines, launched the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects in the Philippines in 1989 for the purpose of reducing poverty and helping various communities engaged in grassroots activities. As of present, 509 grassroots projects have been funded by GGP. Japan believes that this project will not only strengthen the friendship between the peoples of Japan and the Philippines but also contribute to further fostering a strategic partnership between Japan and the Philippines toward the future.
