Japanese Ambassador Kazuhide Ishikawa and Director Ariel Barayuga signed the grant contract for “The Project for Providing Emergency Vehicles for Emergency Response of the BFP in the Identified Areas in Visayas” on March 1, 2016 at the Quezon Memorial Circle. This event is also attended by around 3,500 participants (500 firefighters, 1,000 fire volunteers, and 2,000 other guests) from all over the Philippines. The assistance include 17 emergency vehicles and a grant amounting to US$ 240,572 (approximately 10.10 million pesos) and is funded under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
This project aims to further strengthen the capability of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) during disaster and emergency response. The package of assistance given consists of 7 ambulances, 7 pumper trucks, 2 trucks with portable pump and 1 rescue vehicle. Under this project, BFP will be able to equip their fire stations with the necessary facilities for effective delivery of their services to save lives and properties of the people. Priority is given to the disaster prone areas in Visayas of which BFP has no and/or limited facilities.
Through this project, BFP will be able to improve their services during emergency response cognizant to the efforts being made by Japan in improving disaster risk reduction and management in the Philippines. It is expected that a total of 1.63 million people in the targeted areas in Visayas will benefit from this project.
（※１）Last year 20 emergency vehicles were provided to typhoon Yolanda affected municipalities. This is part of the contribution of Japan on the rehabilitation efforts being conducted in these areas. For this year, additional emergency vehicles will be given to disaster prone communities in Visayas.
（※２）The Government of Japan, as the top ODA donor for the Philippines, launched the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects in the Philippines in 1989 for the purpose of reducing poverty and helping various communities engaged in grassroots activities. As of present, 513 grassroots projects have been funded by GGP. Japan believes that this project will not only strengthen the friendship between the peoples of Japan and the Philippines but also contribute to further fostering a strategic partnership between Japan and the Philippines toward the future.
