16 Filipinos have been chosen to participate as Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) in the 2017 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. They are scheduled to fly to Japan on July 30, 2017.
The following are this year’s participants and their areas of assignment:
On July 25, 2017, the participants visited the Manila Japanese School (MJS) in Taguig City, where they observed English classes and met with Filipino English teachers. Both sides had a fruitful exchange of views on teaching techniques and Japanese classroom practices.

The following day, July 26, 2017, the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) held a pre-departure orientation seminar for the participants, during which they received essential resource materials and learned more about Japanese society and culture in relation to their role as ALTs.
Later that day, His Excellency Ambassador Kazuhide Ishikawa hosted a send-off reception for the participants. Dr. Patricia B. Licuanan, Chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), graced the reception and delivered a message.
Participants for this year’s programme will stay in Japan for a period of one year under their initial contract, which can be renewed for up to five years.
The JET Programme is an initiative by the Japanese Government to engage local Japanese communities towards internationalization, mainly through cultural exchange and foreign language learning. More than 64,000 participants from 65 countries worldwide have participated in the program since its launch in 1987. In the Philippines, recruitment and selection of participants were first administered in 2013 by the Embassy of Japan, in partnership with CHED.
