Inauguration Ceremony of the Consulate-General of Japan in Davao

2019/2/12
On February 10, an inauguration ceremony was held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel in Davao City for celebrating the opening of the Consulate-General of Japan in Davao.

Hosted by Ambassador Koji Haneda and Consul General Yoshiaki Miwa, the event -- which was attended by over 400 guests -- was highlighted by the presence of Minister for Foreign Affairs H.E. Taro Kono, who flew from Japan to attend the opening ceremony as well as hold bilateral meetings with key government officials of the Philippines.

In his speech, Foreign Minister Kono expressed his highest hope that the opening of the Consulate-General of Japan will provide opportunities to further develop the precious friendship between the Philippines and Japan. Moreover, he also reiterated that Japan will always stand by the Philippines and continue to support peace in Mindanao.

To mark the opening of the Consulate-General of Japan in Davao, a Kagamibiraki or Sake barrel breaking ceremony was performed.  The Kagamibiraki, which is a Japanese traditional ceremony of celebration, was participated by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr., Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon, Presidential Peace Process Advisor Carlito Galvez, MILF Chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim, Philippine Ambassador to Japan Jose Laurel V, and Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. Led by Ambassador Haneda, they toasted for the continued strategic partnership between Philippines and Japan, and the success of Consulate-General of Japan in Davao.

Historically, a Consular office of Japan was established in Davao in the year 1920. It was reopened in 1974, after the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan were normalized in 1956.  On January 1 of this year, the Consular office has been transformed to a full-fledged Consulate General of Japan in Davao.  The upgraded status is a concrete proof of the commitment of Japan of putting a premium on its relationship with Davao City, Mindanao and, the Philippines, as a whole.
