Transfer of the air surveillance radar systems to the Philippines

The contract between the Department of National Defense of the Republic of the Philippines (DND) and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) was concluded lately to deliver four (4) MELCO manufactured air surveillance radar systems as part of the Cooperation to Enhance the Philippines’ Capacity in Vigilance and Surveillance based on the Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines Concerning the Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology.

This will be another project based on the said agreement, following the transfer of TC-90 aircrafts that have been agreed upon in 2016, and is the first overseas transfer of a complete defense equipment system that is newly-manufactured by a Japanese company.

Both countries’ foreign minister/secretary concurred in enhancing cooperation on the aspect of security areas in the Japan-Philippines Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in January, 2020. This transfer will promote security and defense cooperation with the Philippines as a strategic partner, furthermore, is also expected to contribute to the security of Japan and Free and Open Indo-Pacific Initiative.
