On 16 October 2021, Ambassador KOSHIKAWA Kazuhiko virtually joined President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and other high-level officials of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines at the “Kapananadem: Remembering the Liberation of Marawi City from Terrorist Influence,” which was held at the Rizal Park, Barangay Datu sa Dansalan, Marawi City, to commemorate the 4th anniversary of the liberation of Marawi City.
In his message, Ambassador Koshikawa commended President Duterte for his outstanding leadership for promotion of the Mindanao Peace Process and reconstruction of Marawi City.
Japan has fully supported the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Marawi City under the the Japan-Bangsamoro Initiative for Reconstruction and Development, or J-BIRD. Under the initiative, the Trans-Central Roads in Lancaf were re-opened to the public in September. On October 15th, in collaboration with UN-Habitat, 150 permanent houses were turned over to displaced families in Barangay Kilala. Despite the considerable challenges posed by COVID-19, a total of 329 houses under this project have been turned over so far in several parts of the Most Affected Areas.
The Government of Japan remains committed to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Marawi City, and unwaveringly supports the Mindanao Peace Process through countless development projects.
