Japan, Philippines signs cooperation on Road Tunnel Construction, O&M

On 24 November, 2021, the Japan Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) Tetsuo Saito signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) with the Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to strengthen Japan and the Philippines’ cooperation on construction, operation and maintenance of road tunnels and related facilities. Minister Tetsuo Saito from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) Tetsuo Saito signed a MOC, together with the Acting Secretary of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Roger Mercado.
With the MOC, Japan will provide a wide range of tunnel technologies and expertise, especially in the field of Operation and Maintenance, and Knowledge and Skills Sharing on disaster risk management and response. For its part, the Philippines will provide necessary support to encourage joint ventures with Japanese expressway-operating companies as well as organize workshops that will facilitate business matching between Japanese and Philippine companies.
This cooperation poised to impact present and future road tunnel projects between Japan and the Philippines, particularly the Davao City Bypass Road and the Dalton Pass East Alternative Road.
