Japan’s Support for Response to the Oil Spill Incident in the Philippines (Advisory on Oil Removal and Providing Satellite Imagery)

2024/8/8
On August 7, the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) held an online meeting with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to assist in response to the oil spill incident off the vicinity of the Manila Bay.

This meeting was held in response to a request from the PCG for assistance in light of the recent oil spill incident caused by the sinking of a tanker in Manila Bay on July 25, and the JCG gave advice on oil spill removal and exchanged insights on the further necessary procedures.

In addition, upon the request of the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), JAXA has been providing emergency observation and satellite images of the situation in Manila Bay taken by ALOS-2 (Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2) through the international cooperation framework of The Sentinel Asia.

Japan expects this support to contribute in the prevention of the spread of marine pollution and the restoration of the marine environment and will continue to work closely with the Philippines.

*The Sentinel Asia: an international framework for disaster management in which images from Earth observation satellites and other sources are provided to each other in the event of a disaster. The framework was established in 2006 as an initiative of the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF) led by Japan, JAXA serves as the secretariat. 116 organizations related to space and disaster management are members. In January 2023, the PhilSA joined the Sentinel Asia.
