2016/9/27

Japan Information and Culture Cente (JICC) - Press Release No. 49 - 2016

All set for school. The 2016 Batch of MEXT Scholars together with JICC Researcher/Adviser Mr. Simon Kubota and PHILAJAMES members
and officers led by President Jose Camacho Jr. gather for a group photo after the pre-departure orientation on September 24, 2016 at the JICC Hall.

A Pre-Departure Orientation was held by the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) in collaboration with the Philippine Association of Japanese Government Scholars (PHILAJAMES) last September 24, 2016 for a group of upcoming scholars under the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MONBUKAGAKUSHO: MEXT) Scholarship Program.

Founded in 1954, the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program offers students from different countries the chance to study in Japan’s top universities in one of the following categories: Japanese Studies, Research, Teacher Training, College of Technology, Undergraduate, and Specialized Training. Over 3,500 Filipino students have been given MEXT scholarships to date.

The new batch of scholars is set to depart for Japan in time for the start of the October term and is composed of 69 students from the Research, Undergraduate, Teacher Training, and the Young Leaders’ Program (YLP) categories.

PHILAJAMES President Dr. Jose Camacho Jr. opened the event while PHILAJAMES member Dr.  Cristino M. Collado welcomed the scholars and shared his insights and experiences from his stay in Japan. Former YLP Participant Atty. Nicholas Felix L. Ty and former MEXT scholar Dr. Norris Z. Falguerra were then given the floor to provide tips and advice on being a Japanese Government scholar. After an open forum, JICC Researcher and Adviser Mr. Simon Kubota gave his closing remarks where he encouraged the new scholars to work hard and enjoy the student-life that awaits them.

The application period for the Japanese Studies and Teacher Training categories will open in early 2017.
