Embassy of Japan’s First Secretary Kenji Terada, together with Department of Agriculture Director of Agribusiness & Marketing Assistance Service Bernadette F. San Juan, Executive Director of Philippine Council for Agriculture & Fisheries  Ariel T. Cayanan, Negros Oriental Province Governor Roel R. Degamo, Canlaon City Mayor Jimmy Jayme L. Clerigo, and around 60 livestock farmers and traders, led the inauguration ceremony for the “Rehabilitated and Modernized Canlaon, Negros Oriental Livestock ‘Oksyon’ Market” in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental on May 29, 2016. This is a joint project between the Department of Agriculture and the Canlaon City under the Japan Food Security Project for Underprivileged Farmers, (formerly known as the KR2 Program). Utilizing Japan’s Official Development Assistance, the total amount of fund support for this project, which includes Canlaon and four other locations is Thirty Three Million Nine Hundred and Eight Thousand Pesos (P33,908,000.00).

Canlaon City is located at the foot of Mt. Canlaon in Negros Occidental. The land is suited for the good production of sugarcane, rice, fresh vegetables as well as raising livestock.  On the other hand, one of the serious problems faced by farmers is the poor delivery of their farm products with keeping their good quality, which results in large quantity of losses.  This project hopes to remedy this dilemma and is expected to improve the appropriate transactions and the supply chain system, not only of the livestock industry, but also of other farm products in Canlaon and neighboring communities in particular, and the Philippines in general.
