Japanese Ambassador Koji Haneda attended the inauguration ceremony for the coal-fired unit 3 power plant in Pagbilao, Southern Luzon on May 31, 2018. President Rodrigo Duterte and Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi spearheaded the ceremonial switching of the power plant ignition with representatives from of TeaM Energy and Aboitiz Power.
In his speech, President Duterte noted that the opening of the plant will provide employment opportunities to the residents of Quezon province. He also encouraged private companies to find viable and sustainable solutions that will deliver reliable and affordable electricity to homes and industries across the country.
Construction of the plant began in December 2014 by the TeaM Energy Corporation, a joint venture of Tokyo Electric Power Company and Marubeni Corporation, in partnership with Aboitiz Power Corporation, a major holding company in the power sector nationwide. The new power plant unit was constructed at a cost of $976 million, with a generating capacity of 420 megawatts.
The expansion of this power plant is seen to further fuel sustainable economic growth in the country and spur strategic relations between Japan and the Philippines.
