Ambassador Haneda visits a tilapia farm in Maguindanao

On December 13, Ambassador Koji Haneda visited a tilapia farming site in Sultan Mastura, Maguindanao.

The tilapia farming project is part of the Capacity Building for Community Development in Conflict Affected Areas in Mindanao (CD-CAAM / 2012-2016) and was implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The technical support for tilapia farming was given to farmers who are mostly former Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) soldiers. As the social rehabilitation (normalization) of these former MILF soldiers is an important task in the Mindanao peace process, the Japanese Government implemented this project to help the Philippines tackle this challenge.

The tilapia farming technology has enabled the former MILF soldiers to earn a stable income. Neighboring communities have also benefitted from dissemination of technology among farmers, which the JICA project promoted. It is hoped that such assistance from the Government of Japan will contribute to the successful normalization of former MILF soldiers, and to the eventual success of the Mindanao peace process.
