Launching of Decommissioning of Moro Islamic Liberation Front Combatant and Weapons

On Sepember 7, Japanese Ambassador Koji Haneda attended a ceremony for the decommissioning of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) combatants and weapons in Sultan Kuradat, Maguindanao. President Duterte and Bangsamoro Transition Authority Interim Chief Minister Murad, among others, attended the ceremony.
Of 40,000 MILF combatants who will be decommissioned through normalization process, 1,060 already decommissioned attended the ceremony, and 920 collected weapons were displayed. Representatives of the decommissioned combatants were awarded with socio-economic assistance by the President during the ceremony.
Japan provided 40 motorcycles to support Joint Peace and Security Teams (JPST). These motorcycles were displayed together with a message “From the people of Japan”. Other equipment provided by Japan to the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB) has been utilized for the decommissioning as well. Japan will continue to support peace process by strengthening transport capacity and providing equipment, including 10 JPST stations and 25 vehicles, and by improving livelihood of people in Bangsamoro.
