Japan Signs Grant Contract to Support Safe Water Supply and Sanitary Education in Bohol through Japanese NGO Project

2025/4/25

On 25 April 2025, Ambassador ENDO Kazuya signed a grant contract with the Japanese non-governmental organization (NGO) Ikaw-Ako for the third phase of the project titled “The Construction of Rainwater Tanks to Provide Safe Water Supply and Sanitary Education to Prevent Infectious Diseases in Bohol with Frequent Droughts.”. The total grant amounting to USD 149,612 is supported under the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects.

Although the poverty rate in Bohol has improved significantly in recent years, many residents continue to face difficulties accessing safe water due to the limited presence of large rivers and development of water supply systems. This project aims to address the issue by constructing water supply systems that reuse rainwater, optimizing the geographical conditions with relatively high rainfall. It will also establish a robust maintenance and management system and provide sanitary education in rural communities to help protect the health of the residents.

In 2002, the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects was initiated in the Philippines. Since then, the Japanese Government has awarded contracts for 68 projects in the country under this scheme, amounting to more than JPY 2 billion (approximately 808 million pesos*1) in total. Japan believes that these projects will not only strengthen the friendship between the peoples of the Philippines and Japan, but also bolster the existing strategic partnership between the two countries.
