Japan awards Foreign Minister’s Commendation for Dr. NAGAI Hiroko

On 3 November 2025, Ambassador ENDO Kazuya hosted a ceremony to present the Foreign Minister’s Commendation to Dr. NAGAI Hiroko, professor and former Director of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Social Sciences Japanese Studies Program. A distinguished koto musician and academic, Dr. Nagai is being awarded for her outstanding contributions to Japan-Philippines academic and cultural exchange.
Also gracing the event were Japan Foundation Manila (JFM) Director SUZUKI Ben, University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman College of Music Dean Dr. Ma. Patricia Brillantes Silvestre, and Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) President Mr. Melvin Lee.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Endo commended Dr. Nagai’s prolific career as a dedicated Philippine Studies scholar and decorated musical composer, whose work has been recognized by some of the Philippines’ most prestigious award-giving bodies. “Dr. Nagai’s work has truly enriched our countries’ friendship. As we approach the 70th Anniversary of our countries’ normalized relations, we look forward to her continued contributions: bringing our people closer through insightful lectures and compelling concerts,” Ambassador Endo stated in his remarks.

The evening ended with a koto performance by Dr. Nagai, with a masterful rendition of Improvisation VII: Kaibuturan.
The Government of Japan extends its sincere congratulations to Dr. Nagai Hiroko for receiving The Foreign Minister's Commendation. This prestigious honor reflects Dr. Nagai’s significant contributions to strengthening the bilateral relationship between Japan and the Philippines.
